Summary:
Vertical Response has been around for a long time and has many of the same functions as other services out there. They have one or two extras.
Highlights:
One the few differences that Vertical Response offers in comparison from other services is the ability to send direct mail. This ‘snail mail’ feature gives the user several options for postcards that can be sent out as part of a marketing structure. The user will be able to send direct mail right from their browser. Vertical Response offers 75000 royalty-free images for the graphic of the user’s choosing; or they can upload their own. The postcards will then be sent First Class via the USPS.

They also offer surveys, in order to collect data from subscribers and provide better marketing research for the user’s organization.

A couple of other nice features of Vertical response are the ability to integrate with Salesforce and Google Analytics. Also, the list manager allows for custom fields that few other email marketing services offer.

For NPOs (specifically 501(c)(3) nonprofits) Vertical Response now offers up to 10,000 emails per month for free. This is an outstanding offer compared to other email marketing services.

Vertical Response has excellent support, offering quick response time and knowledgeable information to user requests. They offer all three major points of customer service and tech support: Phone Support, Email Support and Live Chat.

Although not overly generous, Vertical Response does offer 25mb of online image storage, whereas some of the better known email marketing companies offer much less.

Vertical Response also can run a SPAM checking order to test user messages before they go out. This is a nice feature that many of the email marketing services are now adopting.

The last thing that differentiates Vertical Response from other services is the ability to check the user’s tracking by domain. This helps to determine whether or not a certain ESP is having difficulty with the email, giving the user more information in their arsenal.
Criticism:
  • The price that the user pays for Vertical Response is of mediocre value. Other services offer more for less money. They are not the most expensive, but they are certainly not the cheapest. Their extras are minimal so the value is reduced.
  • The service lacks some of the features the higher-ranking websites offer. The service doesn't support Unicode or international character sets, nor, can you create demographic filters or track forwarded emails. Additionally, Vertical Responses’ servers were slower than the other services reviewed.
  • If you choose to upload an HTML into the program for your email, your source code cannot exceed 31KB (31950 characters), including the white spaces. This is an unnecessary limitation.
  • Vertical Response does not have any type of editor so there's no way to add images, links or lines without hard coding it into the HTML before you import.
  • Vertical Response would benefit from including tutorials or "how-tos" about their service.
